Cafeína: coffee for gender equity

Sadly, gender inequality is still rife in the Brazilian coffee industry. The country produces around a third of the entirety of the world’s coffee, and many, many women play pivotal parts in making this happen.

But they’re all too often excluded from buying meetings, and it’s the men who have all the say on top-line decisions.

That’s where Cafeína comes in. It’s a collective of 1868 women farmers who produce fantastic coffee in the country. Each member owns a small, great-quality coffee farm, and every single bean they sell helps them to recruit more members.

Cafeína was formed in 2019 to empower, motivate, and inspire women and to give them rightful visibility in the industry.

It’s a meeting point for the members to get together, take part in regular training sessions, learn skills, and share tips on taking their coffee from strength to strength.

Ages of the women in the group range from 20 to 100 years old – its most experienced member, Dona Henriqueta, entered her 10th decade in 2023.

Cafeína Blend has long been a favourite on the Pact menu. It’s a blend of three coffees from three of the group’s members: Adalgisa, Julia and Elza. Part of the price we pay for the coffee goes to paying these farmers properly, and the rest goes to running the group.

All of the coffees behind the blend scored at least 85 points on the cupping table – five higher than the speciality requirement!

Our Director of Coffee and Social Impact, Will, is currently in Brazil looking at what else we can bring to Pact customers from Cafeína (watch this space; it’s looking very promising!).

Until then, keep brewing – the more Cafeína coffee sipped in the UK, the more the group grows!
